Sweet Revenge
15 October 2009

When I first visited Sweet Revenge, I didn’t even realize the whole concept. Either my date wasn’t very detail-oriented or I didn’t have my restaurant reviewer toque adjusted properly. I did, however, meet the mastermind. Owner Marlo Scott, a beautiful, pixie-sized ball of fire, started Sweet Revenge in 2007 as revenge against, not the other market saturating city cupcake cookers, but evil corporate America. (She’s sort of the anti-Blair Waldorf.)

The next time I visited I realized the cupcake factor, and got in on some beer and cupcake pairing. Oh, did I stutter? That’s right, I said BEER AND CUPCAKE PAIRINGS. Their signature cupcakes include the Sweet Revenge (peanut butter cake, ganache filling, peanut butter buttercream icing), the Pure (Mexican vanilla cake with Mexican vanilla icing), the Dirty (you guessed it - chocolate version), and my personal favorite Crimson & Cream (raspberry red velvet with cream cheese frosting). Marlo pairs Crimson & Cream with Duchys Originals Organic Ale for the boys and a Lunetta Prosecco bellini for the girls. Except I’m a girl, and I went with the ale. So this is not health food, but in the ubiquitous cupcake showdown, Sweet Revenge takes the, er, cake. And apparently Time Out agreed, for they gave Sweet Revenge the 2009 Eat Out Award “Best Case Against Cupcake Backlash.”

She also has delicious peanut butter cookies. She also has delicious oatmeal. She also has delicious quiche. She also has delicious regulars. Yes, as in the customers. If you visit late on a quiet night, you’ll probably be able to pick one up. I may even be able to recommend a few. Sadly, my extracurricular activities have me visiting other hoods, so I can only get to Sweet Revenge on purposeful trips to the West Village sweet spot. But if you haven’t been, I recommend you plan a purposeful occasion of your own and celebrate giving it to the man, one cupcake at a time.
