Shelf Life
6 November 2009
Who would’ve thunk that books would be making their way onto this text-averse girl’s holiday wish list? Especially coming from someone who prefers watching movies first and their written counterparts never. Someone who spent her college years pouring through CliffNotes while mastering the art of the skim? Well, all that I needed to convert me it turns out was a pretty book jacket (… so I guess not much has changed). Available at Penguin, the freshly designed cover art is the brainchild of Coralie Bickford-Smith who takes eight classics (from the likes of Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, and Emily Brontë) and gives them artsy linen bindings. Each book is adorned with colorful foil patterns that symbolize central themes of each novel; grand candelabras for Pip’s attempt to rise amongst high society and swans for heroine Elizabeth Bennet. Just a warning though. They are so beautifully done they will probably end up stacked on your book shelf with their pretty spines facing out instead of getting read. $130 for all 8 books.
