Consumers tend to make straightforward New Year resolutions: Spend less, save more and pay down debt. This year, it appears retailers want to change just one thing...their bottom line. The tried-and-true methods aren't working anymore as consumers learn to resist the urge to buy, so merchants are starting their own trends. According to Bloomberg, consumer spending stalled in December, with a rise of just 0.1 percent, as Americans took advantage of last...

Through the ages, women have never had a lack of complaints about the inequalities between men and women. Particularly when it comes to romance, dating and age, there's always been a lot to complain about. I wish I could say that I am not about to contribute to that litany of gripes, but oh no, I'm about to jump right in. So, this whole "Cougar" thing. I wouldn't mind if that term got lost in the Bronx Zoo and was never heard from again. Or was shot...

          Editor's Notes

    8 November 2010

You know what we are missing by beeing born in a country that allows us to buy at least  5 different types of eye cream(puffines, dark circles, wrinkles, upper eyelid, lower eyelid)?  Well, for starters the creative common sense mind to fix dry skin with soy milk and know how to make summer foundation work in the winter. Thank God for the editors of InStyle, Ultimate Beauty Secrets, they came up with a must-have beauty bible, that offers us a number of cold weather tips that will have you looking your best.

    InStyle Beauty Secrets

    1. Supplement Your Skin Routine
If you have dry skin that is flakey, consider changing up your routine and washing your face with dandruff shampoo instead of your regular cleanser once a month; this reduces the yeast levels that cause scaly skin.

    2. Brighten Up

Refresh your complexion by dipping a washcloth in soy milk and resting it on your face for 10 minutes once a week. Soy is a skin brightener and contains phytoestrogen, a plant-derived estrogen that is thought to help prevent wrinkles.

    3. Stay Hydrated
Keep skin hydrated on cold nights with a make-it-yourself humidifier. Hang a wet towel from the doorknob overnight (wring out the edges to prevent drips); by morning, the towel will be dry but your skin won’t.

    4. Adjust Your Color
To make summer foundation work in winter, dab a little foundation on your hand, then squeeze a pea-size blob of SPF 30 on top and mix until the sunscreen blends completely with the foundation, lightening it by a shade or two.

    5. Moisturize Dry Lips
Lips extra dry? Combine 1 teaspoon honey with 1 teaspoon sugar to exfoliate them. Blend the two ingredients in your hand, then apply the mixture in a circular motion for 90 seconds before wiping off.

The book is available now for $22.95 in bookstores nationwide and at InStyle.com/ultimate. I guess we can even buy common sense in our good Ol’ USA.

Lord and Taylor LogoLet me just start by saying that this is not a paid advertisement.
In fact,   for years I did not walk into the Lord and Taylor store, not even when I stopped to admire their Christmas decorations. Then I remember about a year ago being in a cab when my eyes stopped on the small monitor in front of me that was running a Lord and Taylor short advertisement. And ads kept popping up on busses and bus stops, in cabs and on cabs, pretty much everywhere I looked around. Their changes in management made a front page in WWD, and everybody knew by then that Lord and Taylor was up for a big change.  Today I found an email from their affiliated program (yes, I did sign up for their affiliated program) and I though it’s worth sharing with you because some of those deals are not to be ignored. If you are anything like me, you have not been in that store since 1993 and are setting yourself to miss on some great deals. Give them a second chance, and I hope you score a great buy doing so.

    27 September 2010

I’ve been working a lot from home this past year. One of the perks of this arrangement is getting to spend time with Socrates, my beloved dog. The others: not having to get dressed and not putting makeup on every morning. Could I go a week without makeup? Yes, my dog wouldn’t mind it. And by the time my husband comes home from work; he is so tired, I doubt he cares if I wear makeup or not. My life allows me to wear jeans and not put lipstick on every morning. But there are a lot of women in the corporate world, who have to maintain a certain look, and wearing makeup is sometimes part of it. That’s where I have a problem with the “No Makeup Week” initiative. In case you haven’t heard about it - it is a movement started by the Chicago freelance writer, Rachel Rabbit White, who decided to swear off makeup for seven days, letting the readers of her successful sex journalism blog in on the challenge. It appears that more than 300 people pledged to take the challenge on Facebook and young women sent photos of their nude faces to be posted on the blog.  I applaud the idea of getting young women to adhere to a cause. I respect the women who don’t get pressured into conforming to rules they are not comfortable with. However, the disproportioned amount of attention it got from major publications like Jezebel and HuffPost, makes me wonder if it is just another successful strategy to increase the blog’s traffic. This is the interview HuffPost published, after speaking to writer via email.  Decide for yourself.

    25 February 2009

    Dear Friends,
ashamed dogWe are really sorry for the recent screw-ups and don’t want to lose your confidence.
I personally want to apologize for the errors in the sample sale dates/addresses for Prive and eco(mpassion) sales and I want to show that we mean what we say, and we say what we mean….. To prove that, I will send a $50 check to each of the members who brought errors to our attention.  We will make this our policy to say “I am sorry”, but it will be only one check per error so if you notice a sale date or address wrong in the future, please post a comment ASAP and you’ll get a check too but only if you were the first one to notice. Now, that’s responsibility! I wish the CEO’s of large corporations and our political leaders were as responsible as we are.  Mirela Gluck – Founder
