What's kosher to wear through fall and what needs to be packed and put away.

7 September 2009

Long gone are rules like banning white after labor day and black bags with brown shoes. Especially in New York, were edgy style comes from places like the Williamsburg and Orchard Street, not glistening windows on 5th Ave. So it’s okay to extend your summer wardrobe while the weather remains warm. It’s not, however, okay to be wearing flip flops and mini skirts at the end of September.

white jeans all yearYour whites. Pack up the teeny white shorts and probably some tank top numbers, but hold onto white pants, looser-fitting dresses and flowy tops that can be paired with a belt and skinny jeans and lightweight sweaters. When the temperature drops, load on the layers. White jeans look great paired with this season’s fur, scarves and such and can carry your wardrobe deep into winter wonderland.

As for dresses, choose smart combos of summers dress paired with boyfriend blazers or lightweight sweaters. But begin pairing them with closed-toe ballet flats, or a flat chunkier bootie. As for your yellow espadrilles, played out gladiator sandal and worn Haviana flip flop, you might consider giving those a rest.

If it’s hot. It’s hot. Thigh high boots and bomber jackets will just have to wait. In the meantime, feel free to rock your flower print dresses,

If you can venture out of your stilettos, head to Williamsburg by Aug. 30th for La Superior's first ever Ceviche Week.

27 August 2009

The only way I can’t get anxiety leaving my borough is if Mexican food is involved, and I’ll happily trek to Williamsburg for La Superior any weekday. (On the weekends, I rock 4 inches, minimum, and can’t be trekking so far in my platform stilettos.) Anyway, imagine my glee when I found out that La Superior is hosting it’s first ever “Ceviche Week.” The smog over the BK lifted, the clouds parted and the Mexican angels shook their maracas. Alleluia.

As predicted, Ceviche Week at La Superior does not disappoint.  But before I get to the lime cooked fishies, let me remindla superior the masses of one thing. The camarones tacos at La Superior are A-mazing; and even if you go for Ceviche Week, order these wrapped yumminesses. And why is the limonda so good? How do they make it such? A spin on our last reviews Battle of the Mexican Corn, La Superior’s ezquites are cups of corn kernels with a bit of cheese, lime and mayo-ey butter. I didn’t put them in the running because it really was a Nolita war, but seriously, they deserve some cred.

And the ceviche…Until August 30th, La Superior’s menu features a wide variety of most delicious ceviches. There is lobster, shrimp, whitefish, scallops, some other fish, tuna. You name it, they made it. The lobster and shrimp are delicously spiced with cilantro, limey, lemony sauce with a touch of garlic and bit of heat. After the corn and tacos, all I could fit if I’m set to rock tights and leather pants this fall. But I may swing by again this weekend for another round. That is, if I can venture out of my stilettos.
Please note: Patience is a virtue at La Superior. The laid-back hipsteresque service has been known to irritate more than one guest. But I mean, what do you expect outside of Manhattan. Oh, c’mon! I had to say it.

La Superior   295 Berry Street between South 2nd and South 3rd  Williamsburg, BK; 718.388.5988; Open daily until 1 a.m. for lunch and dinner, Saturdays 2 a.m.

Sheer dresses hit the redcarpet running, but can you sport them?

25 August 2009

Oh Megan Fox, how we loathe your flawlessness. As if we weren’t jealous enough, Megan Fox struts down the red carpet wearing a little black that fades to sheer at the top. It looked amazing, but can we copy? Strapless or skin-showing dresses often forgive not so smooth arms, a few lumps and armpit bulge. Sheer dresses, however aim to show what is usually covered by fabric, but rather than having some space to move around and breathe, the sheer dresses cut confound your skin, cutting it off in ways that may not flatter.leighton Meester sheer

megan fox sheer dress Translation: avoid dresses and shirts with sheer areas that you wouldn’t normally show. So if you wouldn’t normally show your belly, then a dress with a sheer belly - albeit, I haven’t seen one to date - is a no no. Megan Fox, may not have a stitch of her she’d be afraid to bear, but using her dress as an example, if you wouldn’t wear a strapless dress as low as this one, then don’t do the sheer. The sheer stripes would be hell for tummy rolls. Choose wisely.  Feeling brave, Leighton Meester covered and uncovered her favorite parts in the (right) Emilio de la Morena sheer paneled number she sported down the MTV Movie Awards red carpet. A non-celeb feeling frisky enough to expose their right rear? We can’t fathom, but hey, if you got it, flaunt it.

Then there are some celebs we just can’t measure up to, in style, in attitude, in talent. In short, some sheer is best left to the professionals.
